Add This To Your “List To Explore”!

If you’re interested in history, the arts and southern culture plan a weekend in Savannah. This city boasts the largest historic district in the U.S., dating back to 1733, and is well known for its elegant architecture and southern charm.

Start your Savannah adventure by taking a trolley tour or horse and buggy ride. It’s a fun way to learn about the city’s history and get the lay of the land. The neighborhoods are lined with historic homes and businesses. Each designed around a square reserved as a park so that everyone can enjoy a bit of green space. These parks boast beautiful gardens, benches and there is usually a monument in the center dedicated to one of the city’s former residents. Forsythe Park, located in the historic district, is one that really stands out. It’s the city’s biggest park, covering over 30 acres, and is well known for its large fountain, built in 1858. Here you can relax, take in the scenery, listen to local talent, and one of my favorite activities…people watch! I would definitely recommend a visit!

The City Market is also a must see. It is two blocks long, located on a pedestrian only street also in the historic district. It includes shops, art galleries, restaurants, bars, and live music. Perfect spot on a weekend evening!

Head towards the riverfront district to take a stroll along Factor’s Street. The street runs from east to west above the Savannah River. It is lined with vast century old brick buildings with iron walkways leading up to the entrances. Most of the buildings were warehouses at one point, now converted into offices, shops, and restaurants. The area was formerly a center of commerce for Savannah’s cotton factors or brokers. Some impressive buildings along the street include: the Cotton Exchange Building and City Hall.

Even though the area may seem pretty flat, the riverfront actually sits below the city. There are several sets of steep stairs along Factor’s Street that can lead you behind the buildings to River Street. It’s like your stepping back in time as you walk along this old shipping port, which is still a major one to this day. The streets are paved with old cobblestone and still lined with gas lanterns. Overgrown vines have taken over and covered many of the buildings. You are quickly brought back to the moment as you watch a huge cargo ship barely squeeze under the Talmadge Memorial Bridge, a modern cabled suspension bridge spanning the Savannah River.

There are plenty of opportunities to shop or grab a bite to eat in this area as well. If you love sweets, River Street is the place to be! I would definitely recommend stopping by River Street Sweets; their pralines are fantastic! You can also watch them make salt-water taffy!

If you’re feeling brave you might also reserve a spot on the evening Ghost Tour to visit the haunts of past residents in one of the nation’s most haunted cities.
