An Engineering Feat…

Have you ever spent 14 years on something? How about 14 years building something? Well, that is how long it took to build the Brooklyn Bridge.

It all started because a man named John Roebling got stuck in the ice trying to cross the East River. Twenty people died while constructing this national monument and when they were finished in 1883, the public did not believe that it was strong enough to cross. Therefore a man by the name of P.T. Barnum led a caravan of circus animals, including a herd of 21 elephants, across the bridge to prove the skeptic’s wrong.

On May 24th 1883, about 150,000 people walked over the Brooklyn Bridge. Now, bridging the gap between Manhattan and Brooklyn, The Brooklyn Bridge has become one of New York’s most popular landmarks.
