San Antonio is one of the largest cities in Texas. It is filled with flavor, culture, and excitement, as well as historical landmarks from the very first civilian settlement in Texas.
This impressive city offers endless educational opportunities for student groups of all ages. Here are five not-to-be-missed activities on a high school tour of San Antonio.
Narrated boat tour through the River Walk
San Antonio’s most famous attraction, the iconic River Walk, consists of a series of parks and walkways that meander alongside the San Antonio River.
You and your students can take an exciting boat trip down this urban waterway and marvel at the varied architecture. It’s easy to see the city’s German, Mexican, French, Irish, and American Indian heritage here.
Sit back and relax while your guide takes your students through the history of the city. On this tour, you’ll also see the statue of the city’s namesake, St. Anthony of Padua.

The Alamo
The Alamo Mission, commonly called The Alamo, is a historic Spanish mission and fortress compound. It was founded by Roman Catholic missionaries in the 18th century.
This remarkable UNESCO World Heritage site was where brave Texans fought Mexican forces in the Battle of the Alamo. They faced General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna’s much larger army in what was a pivotal event in the Texas Revolution.
Relive the events that occurred during the battle and the importance of this historic event with your students. While you are visiting the place that it happened, encourage them to reflect on the rich and savage history of their country.

Travel to the top of the Tower of the Americas for an aerial view of San Antonio
You and your students will love a trip to the observation platform of the Tower of the Americas. This 750 ft landmark was built for the 1968 World’s Fair. It was the tallest observation tower until 1996, when the Las Vegas Stratosphere Tower was completed. It offers a spectacular view of the Alamo City.
At the top, there’s a revolving restaurant where you and your students can enjoy a meal while taking in the gorgeous panorama. Your braver students will love the thrilling 4D theater ride that takes them on a high-flying trip across the Lone Star State!

A San Antonio Symphony Concert
Your music-loving students will jump at the opportunity to see a professional symphony orchestra live and in person!
The collection of music offered includes a contemporary ‘pops’ series, as well as special concerts. This means that there is something for each of your students to appreciate. Check out their website for full details of the shows currently playing.
No trip to San Antonio would be complete without a visit to the renowned Six Flags Fiesta Texas! This is San Antonio’s biggest and most popular themed attraction. It features dozens of thrill rides and activities where your students can relax after all of the learning they’ve been doing on the trip.
The focus of this destination is Southwestern music and culture. You’ll catch fantastic live entertainment as you and your students explore the six themed areas of the park, each one as unique and exciting as the next.
