Mary Poppins On Broadway
I remember the first time I saw Marry Poppins. I was around five years old and it was movie pizza night. I sat glued to the TV until the very end, which is not typical of a hyper 5 year old.
Afterwards I attempted to walk on ceilings and climb up chimneys. I also sang Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious for a straight month. At the time it was the most magical and exciting movie I had ever seen.
About a month ago I got to experience the excitement of Mary Poppins all over again on Broadway. To start with, the New Amsterdam Theatre is gorgeous. Disney purchased the theatre in 1993 and from what I hear carried out massive renovations. The crystal chandeliers and velvet seats make it hard to believe the theatre was ever in poor shape to begin with
Once the show started it was hard to keep my eyes off the stage. The staging and props are some of the best I’ve ever seen. There are several magic moments where the entire crowd says, “oooh” and “ahhhh” and no one can seem to figure out how they are able to turn a black and white set into full color with a snap! My favorite part is when Burt (the chimney sweep), sings “Step in Time”. I won’t give it away, but it’s really an amazing production!
